Wildlife Habitat Management Area - Wyoming

This wildlife habitat management area is in the southwest corner of the Gros Ventre Range off U.S. Highway 189. This is historic elk winter range and more than 2,000 elk winter here. The land within and surrounding this area is crucial winter habitat for more than 75 moose. A herd of approximately 40 bighorn sheep find much needed habitat on the rocky grasslands between Stinking Springs and Hoback Junction. The land adjacent to this area provides sufficient food for blue and ruffed grouse and black bear. This WHMA lies within bear country! This area is closed each year from December 1 through April 30.
