State Recreation Area - Wyoming

Hawk Springs State Recreation Area is located on Hawk Springs Reservoir, 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Hawk Springs and 10 miles (16 km) north of La Grange in Goshen County, Wyoming. The park has a boat ramp, picnicking area, and campsites. The reservoir is home to a great blue heron rookery, accessible by boat. Other area waterfowl include blue-winged and green-winged teals, gadwalls, wood ducks, and pintails. Largemouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish are found in the reservoir.

WYOPARKS.STATE.WY.US WYOPARKS.STATE.WY.US PARK FEES & PERMITS The daily use fee is $6 per Wyoming resident vehicle, or $9 per non-resident vehicle, and is required to enter and use park areas and facilities. An annual daily use permit is available. The camping fee is $15 per Wyoming resident vehicle or $25 per non-resident vehicle (includes daily use fee). An annual camping permit is also available for Wyoming residents. THINGS TO DO AND SEE PARK RULES • • • • • • • Park dumpsters are for park use only. Litter must be disposed of in provided containers. Keep motorized vehicles on designated roads and trails. A valid driver’s license is required. All pets must be kept on a leash at all times. Firearms and fireworks are not allowed. Obey posted signs, traffic barriers and speed limits. No glass containers Camping in designated camping sites is restricted to one camping unit (tent, travel trailer or motor vehicle designed for camping) plus two licensed vehicles (car, boat or RV trailer) plus a maximum of 10 people (immediate family members, kids, grandparents, etc. of permit holder). Hawk Springs State Park has activities for everyone to enjoy: boating, waterskiing, fishing, birdwatching and just relaxing. For a complete listing of park rules, visit Guernsey State Park headquarters. Camping: Hawk Springs has 25 designated primitive campsites. Campsites are identified with a picnic table and fire ring. The site’s campground has comfort stations and potable water hydrants. Hawk Springs State park is located on Wyoming Highway 85, 25 miles south of Torrington. Fishing: Fisherman have long known that Hawk Springs is a good fishing destination. Game fish include walleye, largemouth bass, yellow perch, channel catfish and black crappie. Walleye fishing is best in June and July. A valid fishing license is required by both residents and non residents. Winter ice fishing is also good at the park. The park has a boat launching ramp and a boat dock. Game and fish questions can be addressed to the local game wardens: Lingle, 307 837 2840 or Torrington, 307 532 2433. Hawk Springs reservoir and the surrounding area are owned by the Horse Creek Conservation District. When word began to spread about the recreational opportunities at Hawk Springs, visitation increased dramatically. The site was named a state recreation area in 1987, at which time the Wyoming Recreation Commission (now called the Division of State Parks and Historic Sites and Trails; Wyoming Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources) agreed to administer the site. In 1989, the agency further improved the site with additional tables and fire grills and a sprinkler drip system for trees donated by the Hawk Springs boat club. Many other trees were also planted. In 1990, camping fees were first collected. The gravel access road leading to the recreation site from Highway 85 is a county road maintained by Goshen County. Bird Watching: Hawk Springs reservoir boasts a blue heron rookery. At the south end of the reservoir in the reeds, patient bird watchers will be rewarded by a glimpse of the blue heron. This may only be accessed by boat. Other birds in the area include bald eagles, great horned owls, snow and Canada geese, waterfowl of all types, shorebirds, song birds and raptors.
