RANGER PEAK
LOOP TRAIL
1.4 mi
(round trip)
Moderate to
Challenging
Named after the renowned Texas Rangers, this loop takes
you around Ranger Peak and atop the mountain ridge
towards the B-36D Bomber Historical Crash Site Overlook.
This trail leads to the Ranger Peak Observation Platform.
THOUSAND
STEPS TRAIL
1.6 mi
(one-way)
Challenging
During the New Deal Era of President Roosevelt, the
Thousand Steps Trail was constructed by the Work Projects
Administration in the 1930s. This trail was originally used
by the El Paso Electric Company to access the Chalet
Guardhouses near Ranger Peak. It is now used by visitors
seeking the B-36D Bomber Historical Crash Site memorial.
This trail starts either at the Ranger Peak Loop Trail
intersection or the Stanton Street Trailhead (not shown
on map).
STAYING SAFE
KNOW YOUR LIMITS. Prepare for sun and heat. Wear
sunscreen, insect repellent and appropriate
clothing/hiking shoes.
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. Your body quickly loses
fluids when you’re on the trail. Bring a quart of water per
hour of activity.
TRAIL ETIQUETTE
TELL OTHERS WHERE YOU’LL BE. If possible, avoid
exploring alone. Tell someone where you are going and when
you plan to return.
Trash your trash. Keep the park natural. Pack out all of your trash and Leave No Trace.
Leave feeding to nature. Feeding wild animals will make them sick and more likely to
cause harm to people.
WEATHER CHANGES QUICKLY. Check forecasts before you
leave and prepare for unexpected changes in the weather.
Pets are not allowed on the Aerial Tramway Gondola, but leashed pets are welcomed
on the trail. Service pets are an exception.
HIKING ALONG THE RIDGE IS NOT PERMITTED. Staying
on designated trails is the safest way to hike. Off-trail hiking is a
violation of state law.
Take only memories and pictures. Disturbing or removing any of the park’s plants,
animals or artifacts is a violation of state law.
Check in. Inform park staff once you have completed your hike.
PARK TRAILS ARE PRIMITIVE AND STRENUOUS. Hikers
can purchase a one-way ticket for Tramway departures or
returns. All Wyler Aerial Tramway State Park hiking trails require
a permit and are open during park operating hours only.
