Canoe Creek State Park is located in Frankstown Township in Blair County, Pennsylvania.
Canoe Lake, at 155 acres (63 ha), is the focus of recreation at the park and is open for fishing year-round. Fisherman can catch bass, trout, walleye, muskellunge, pickerel and catfish during the summer and winter months at Canoe Lake.
There are eight miles of trails that are open year-round to hiking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, mountain biking and snowmobiles. These trails follow the shores of Canoe Lake and pass through woodlands, wetlands, meadows and the historic limestone kilns.

The primary purpose of Pennsylvania state parks is to provide
opportunities for enjoying healthful outdoor recreation and serve as
outdoor classrooms for environmental education. In meeting these
purposes, the conservation of the natural, scenic, aesthetic, and
historical values of parks should be given first consideration.

CANOE CREEK STATE PARK
The 961-acre Canoe Creek State Park is located
in the scenic and peaceful Canoe Creek Valley,
12 miles east of Altoona. This beautiful park
in the Ridge and Valley Province of southern
Pennsylvania features a picturesque 155-acre
lake surrounded by wetlands, old fields, mature
forests, and the historic Blair Limestone Kilns.
Canoe Creek State Park is a modern
park facility developed during the Project
70 expansion era of state parks and was
dedicated in 1979. Today, the park offers many
recreational opportunities and offers modern
cabins for lodging.
Enjoy the Winter
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: All hiking,
equestrian, and biking trails are available for
cross country skiing.
Directions
To reach Canoe Creek State Park, travel on US
22 to the small village of Canoe Creek (seven
miles east of Hollidaysburg), turn north onto
Turkey Valley Road for one half-mile to the gate
of Canoe Creek State Park, located on the right.
Ice thickness is not monitored. For your safety,
make sure ice is at least 4” thick for a single
angler or skater, 7” thick for a small group, or
6” thick for iceboating. Always carry safety
equipment.

5:00 PM, Monday to Saturday, for state park
information and reservations.
ICE SKATING: Ice skating is permitted on
the lake and on the two ponds at the East Shore
Day Use Area. The ice is not groomed for ice
skating conditions.
ICEBOATING: Iceboats must have a launch
permit. For your safety, make sure ice is at least
6” thick. Always carry safety equipment.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND INTERPRETATION
Environmental education and interpretive
programs are available year round and explore
a wide variety of ecological and environmental
topics. Through activity-oriented programs
utilizing the park’s resources, participants gain
a better understanding of our fragile natural
ecosystems.
School group programming for all grade
levels and teacher workshops are available.
Scout, church, civic, and private groups can
also arrange for special programs. Advanced
scheduling for group programming is required.
The Terry Wentz Education Center is open year
round and provides exhibits and information on
the park history and wildlife as well as the park’s
environmental education programs. Call ahead
for education center hours.
RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Spend the Day
MODERN CABINS: Eight modern
cabins are perched in a lovely setting on the
hill above the lake and are available for rent
year round. Each cabin sleeps six people and
is equipped with two bedrooms including
one room with two sets of bunk beds and
one room with a double bed. The cabins also
have a living room/dining room, modern
bathroom, kitchen, electric heat, and modern
conveniences throughout, including stove,
refrigerator, and microwave. Cabins include
an outside fire ring and picnic table.
The cabins are within walking distance
of the swimming area, hiking trails, the
historic limestone kilns, and the Terry
Wentz Education Center. The rental period
during summer is one week. Throughout the
remainder of the year, a two-night minimum
stay is required.
FISHING: The beautiful 155-acre Canoe
Lake is stocked with game fish such as
walleye, muskellunge, and trout and is fed by
two coldwater trout streams. Other species
include bass, chain pickerel, perch, catfish,
and a variety of panfish. Canoe Lake is in the
Big Bass Program to promote young bass to
grow to a larger size. With this program, the
lake has special regulations. Pennsylvania
Fish and Boat Commission regulations and
laws apply. An ADA fishing deck is on the
east side of the lake adjacent to Pavilion #3.
SWIMMING: Families enjoy the large
sand swimming beach which is open from
late May to early September, unless otherwise
posted. An available lap lane is marked by
buoys. Swimming hours are from 8:00 AM
to sunset. Please follow posted rules for
swimming. Swim at your own risk
The modern bathhouse includes showers
and dressing booths.
A food concession stand at the swimming
beach offers a variety of snack food and
drink items and provides a dining terrace
overlooking the lake.
PICNICKING: Scenic, shaded areas on
the east and west sides of the lake provide
many opportunities for picnics and gatherings.

RESERVATIONS: Lodging in Pennsylvania state parks can
be reserved 11 months to three days before the day of arrival.
If it is two days or less before the arrival date, call the state
park to inquire about availability.

Monday through Saturday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, or visit

Reservations can be made using MasterCard, VISA,
American Express, and Discover credit cards; personal,
traveler’s, and cashier’s checks; or a Pennsylvania State Parks
Gift Card. To receive a confirmed reservation, full payment
must be received within ten days of making the reservation.
FEES: A non-refundable transaction fee is charged for each
reservation.
Cabin, lodge, unique house, and inn prices incur additional
state and/or county local tax(es). The county local hotel
occupancy tax rate varies depending on the location in the
Commonwealth.
Designated dog-friendly facilities charge an additional fee
per night.
MINIMUM/MAXIMUM STAY: Modern cabins have a
two-night minimum and a 14-night maximum stay in the
non-peak season. In the peak summer season, the second
Friday in June to the third Friday in August, rentals are
weekly (Friday to Friday).
CANCELLATIONS AND CHANGES: Cancellations,
changes, or transfers to reservations will be assessed a fee and
can be made prior to arrival by the Pennsylvania State Parks
Reservation Center.
Any cancellation, change, or transfer made upon arrival
must be processed through the state park. For complete
information on fees, cancellations, changes, transfers, and

Policy at the website in the "Reservations" section above.
Lodging Rules

CHECK-IN: Check-in time is 5:00 PM. If arriving after park
office hours or on a weekend, please check your email
confirmation under the security alerts section for your cabin
key location.
CHECK-OUT: Lodging must be vacated by 9:00 AM. After
cleaning the facility, disposing of trash, removing personal
property, and locking the cabin, return keys and paperwork to
the park office. If the office is closed, deposit keys and
paperwork in the mail slot of the park office door.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES: Alcoholic beverages are
prohibited in all Pennsylvania state parks.
PETS: Pets are permitted only in cabins 7 and 8. Pets are
prohibited in swimming areas, buildings, and all overnight
facilities not participating in the pet program.
Guide dogs and service dogs are not considered pets.
MOTOR VEHICLES: Park only on parking spurs. Two
vehicles are permitted at each cabin.
),5(6Fires are only permitted in fire rings and grills. Fires
must be attended at all times and extinguished before leaving
the area.
Firewood is not provided. Cutting live or standing trees and
the operation of chainsaws are prohibited.

QUIET HOURS: Campers must not disturb the sleep of
others between 9:00 PM and 8:00 AM.
HUNTING: Use extreme caution with firearms at all times.
Other visitors use the park during hunting seasons. Firearms
and archery equipment used for hunting may be uncased and
ready for use only in authorized hunting areas during hunting
seasons. In areas not open to hunting or during non-hunting
seasons, firearms and archery equipment shall be kept in the
owner's vehicle or enclosed trailer. Exceptions include: law
enforcement officers and individuals with a valid Pennsylvania
License to Carry Firearms are authorized to carry a firearm
concealed on their person while they are within a state park.
