Yosemite Essentials
Seasonal Closures
Some roads, trails, and services open later in
spring; seasonal opening dates vary. Stop by
an information center or visit go.nps.gov/
conditions to check for updates.
Visitors stand in awe at
the top of Vernal Fall.
In spring, snowmelt feeds roaring waterfalls and a
burst of new life. The remnants of winter are lifting from
Yosemite’s high country. The mountains gradually awaken,
ready to welcome returning wildlife, blooming wildflowers,
and eager visitors.
Explore Yosemite Valley, where the season is in full swing.
Waterfalls and iconic granite formations like Half Dome and
El Capitan tower above lush meadows and forests. Enjoy
strolling or biking many miles of paths on the Valley floor, or
climb a steep and challenging trail to the top of a waterfall
or scenic viewpoint. Turn to page 10.
Visit a tranquil grove of giant sequoias and wander among
these enormous, ancient trees. Turn to page 3.
Drive or take a guided tour to Glacier Point, a scenic
overlook perched on the rim of Yosemite Valley, over 3,000
feet above the Valley floor.
Explore a remote and uncrowded corner of the park
at Hetch Hetchy, a reservoir with its own waterfalls,
wildflowers, and enjoyable trails.
When Tioga Road opens for the season, spend a day
immersed in Tuolumne Meadows and the peaceful high
country, a mosaic of meadows, lakes, domes, and glaciercarved peaks.
Yosemite Valley can be
extremely busy, especially
on weekends and holidays.
Arrive early in the morning or late in
the afternoon to avoid long lines at
park entrances.
Yosemite Valley parking can completely
fill by late morning. Once you find a
parking space, keep it. Walk, bike, or
use free Valley shuttles to get around.
Turn to page 6.
Water can be beautiful but
deadly.
Avoid severe injury or drowning: use
extra caution around flowing water.
Water in rivers and streams can be icy
cold, and currents are much stronger
than they appear. Swimming can be
very unsafe in early spring. Choose
swimming areas carefully and swim
ONLY during low water conditions.
Never swim above waterfalls.
Information Centers
The Yosemite Valley Welcome Center, the
Big Oak Flat Information Station, and the
Wawona Visitor Center are open: turn to
pages 4 & 5 for hours.
Roads Glacier Point Road usually opens in
early May. Tioga Road usually opens in late
May or June. Call 209/372-0200 (press 1,
then 1) for current road status. Opening dates
depend on snowpack and vary each year. NO
pedestrian or bicycle access in spring during
snow plowing.
Campgrounds Most campgrounds are seasonal
and open in spring or summer. A reservation
is required for ALL campgrounds: check
Recreation.gov for availability.
Trails
• Half Dome: cables go up May 22, if
conditions allow. A permit is required:
turn to page 10.
• John Muir Trail: a section of the JMT
(between Clark Point & the Panorama Trail
junction) is closed for crucial trail repairs until
late June. Closures on the Panorama Trail are
also possible. Map on page 10.
Mariposa Grove Shuttles Shuttle service
tentatively begins by early May. When shuttles
aren’t running, walk 2 mi or 3.2 km on the road
or Washburn Trail to reach the grove. Turn to
page 3.
Keep Bears Wild. Proper Food Storage is Required by Federal Law
Bears that frequently access human food* lose their fear of people and can become dangerous. Bears may have to be killed in order to protect people.
During the Day
At Night
DO: Lock your vehicle and keep all
windows closed when you are away. Keep
food*, drinks, and coolers hidden from sight.
DO: Remove food* from your vehicle at
night. Bears can easily break into vehicles in
search of food. Store food inside a bear-proof
locker, in a hotel room or hard-sided cabin, or
in a hard-sided RV with all windows and doors
closed.
DON’T: Leave food* unattended outside,
in a truck bed, or strapped to the outside of
a vehicle.
Food*, trash, and other scented items
may NOT be stored inside vehicles
overnight.
DO: Keep your food* within arm’s reach
while hiking or picnicking.
*To a bear, “food” includes trash, recycling, toiletries, soap, unwashed dishes,
and anything else with a scent. All must be properly stored.
If you see a bear in the park, email yose_bear_mgmt@nps.gov or call the Save-a-Bear hotline at 209/372-0322.
To learn more about food storage and bears, visit KeepBearsWild.org.
It’s illegal to approach or feed
any wild animal in Yosemite,
including birds, squirrels, and deer.
Wildlife can cause injuries and transmit diseases.
Human food is unhealthy for wild animals.
Stay at least 150 ft (46 m) from bears and coyotes.
Stay at least 25 ft (8 m) from other wildlife.

TIOGA ROAD &
TUOLUMNE
MEADOWS
Tioga Road typically opens in May/June.
Call 209/372-0200 (1, 1) to hear road status.
The scenic Tioga Road traverses Yosemite’s
high country, crossing over the Sierra
Nevada at Tioga Pass—almost 10,000 feet in
elevation!
Tuolumne Meadows embodies the high
country. The Wild and Scenic Tuolumne River
winds through broad sub-alpine meadows,
granite domes and peaks. It’s the jumping off
place for many hikes, whether you venture
out for a day or a week. Visitors to the high
country should be aware of wet, muddy, or
snow-covered trails during the early season.
Hikers need to be prepared to stay safe, not
get lost, and to avoid damaging sensitive
meadows and riverbanks.
VISITOR SERVICES
This is a very remote area of the park with
few services and little to no cell coverage. The
Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center will likely
open sometime in June. For other services,
