Yosemite Essentials
What to Expect This Fall
Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road typically close
for the winter in November.
Closing dates depend on the arrival of winter conditions. Temporary closures
and tire chain restrictions are possible on any park road at any time:
call 209/372-0200 (press 1, then 1) to hear current road conditions.
When Tioga Road is closed, there is NO access to Yosemite from the east.
Visitor services are more limited this time of year.
Hours may be changing, and some dining, shopping, information centers,
and other services are closing for the season. Check pages 4 & 5 for current
availability and hours.
Waterfalls may be dry.
Waterfalls peak during spring snowmelt and may be only a trickle or
completely dry this fall.
It’s fire season in Yosemite.
Smoke from wildfires inside or outside the park may affect visibility
and can pose a health concern, especially for sensitive individuals.
Fires are only allowed in portable stoves, barbecue grills, and established fire
rings. Never leave a fire unattended; extinguish the fire completely before you
leave it. Additional fire restrictions may be in effect, depending on conditions.
Expect winter trail conditions by November.
Winter road closures, seasonal trail closures, and winter trail conditions
can all impact your hiking plans. Ask a ranger about trail conditions and
get recommendations for hiking and other things to do in late fall and winter.
Keep Bears Wild.
Proper Food Storage is Required by Federal Law.
Bears that frequently get human food lose their fear of humans and can become dangerous.
Bears may have to be killed to protect people.
During the Day
At Night
DO: Lock your vehicle and keep all
windows closed when you are away. Keep
food, drinks, and coolers hidden from sight.
DO: Remove food from your vehicle at
night. Bears can easily break into vehicles in
search of food. Store food inside a bear-proof
locker, in a hotel room or hard-sided cabin, or
in a hard-sided RV with all windows and doors
closed.
DON’T: Leave food unattended outside,
in a truck bed, or strapped to the outside of
a vehicle.
Food, trash, and other scented items
may NOT be stored inside vehicles
overnight.
DO: Keep your food within arm’s reach
while hiking or picnicking.
To a bear, “food” includes trash, recycling, toiletries, soap, unwashed dishes,
and anything else with a scent. All must be properly stored.
If you see a bear in the park, email yose_bear_mgmt@nps.gov or call the Save-a-Bear hotline at 209/372-0322.
To learn more about food storage and bears, visit KeepBearsWild.org.
It is illegal to approach or feed
any wild animal in Yosemite,
including birds, squirrels, and deer.
Wildlife can cause injuries and transmit diseases.
Human food is unhealthy for wild animals.
Stay at least 150 ft (46 m) from bears and coyotes.
Stay at least 25 ft (8 m) from other wildlife.
