"Homolovi" is Hopi for "Place of the Little Hills" — the traditional name for Winslow, Arizona.
Homolovi State Park now serves as a center of research for the late migration period of the Hopi from the 1200s to the late 1300s. While archaeologists study the sites and confer with the Hopi to unravel the history of Homolovi, Arizona State Parks provides the opportunity for visitors to visit the sites and use park facilities including a visitor center and museum, various trails and a campground. Several covered picnic tables are located throughout the park. Pullouts provide the opportunity to observe wildlife in this park of over 4,000 acres at an elevation of 4,900 feet.

Riordan Mansion State Historic Park (67
miles) Built in 1904, this 40-room historic
mansion is an excellent example of rustic Arts
and Crafts-style architecture. The mansion
was also designed by Charles Whittlesy who
designed the Grand Canyon’s El Tovar Hotel.

Nestled in the tall pines of Arizona rim country

Lyman Lake State Park (102 miles) There’s
no shortage of activities at this secluded
getaway: hiking, fishing, swimming, boating,
archaeology, and petroglyph trails are all
available! And with no size restrictions on
watercrafts, boaters can enjoy waterskiing and

Homolovi Sites I and II are easily accessible to
visitors.
Homolovi I: Parking lot is located about 1 mile
past the campground and is next to the Little
Colorado River. An easy 0.3-mile stroll on an
old dirt road leads to the site.
Homolovi II: A 0.4-mile paved trail that is
wheelchair accessible. The trail allows access
to the largest of the park’s archaeological
sites containing an estimated 1,200 to 2,000
rooms. It is believed that these pueblos were
once home to ancestors of the present-day
Hopi people. Much of this activity took place
during the 14th century. Hopi migration stories,
architecture, pottery styles, and art motifs tie
the Hopi to the inhabitants of Homolovi.
General Rules
• Do not litter! “Leave no trace” and pack
out what you bring in, or use the trash
receptacles provided in the park.
• Drive your vehicle only on designated
paved surfaces. Park only in designated
parking areas. Do not park on the side of
the road.
• Stay on designated trails. Cutting trails
degrades habitat and harms the landscape.
• Do not use glass containers in the park.
• All of our parks adhere to firearm and
hunting regulations. Please familiarize
yourself with this information.
Fires
• Keep fires in grills or designated state parks
fire rings. Never leave fires unattended!
• Do not gather firewood in the parks.
• Fireworks are not permitted in state parks.
• Be “fire smart” and check fire restrictions at
azstateparks.com/fire-safety.
Camping
• Campsites are limited to up to six adults and
up to 10 people total. Cabins are limited to
six people total.
• There are designated dump facilities at the
park for your convenience.
Pets
• Keep your pets on a maximum six-foot
leash at all times. Pets must be attended at
all times.
• Pick up after your pet.
• For additional information related to pets,
visit our website or ask park staff.
Additional Rules
• This park is established on land that the
Hopi people consider sacred. Please be
considerate and leave all artifacts, pottery
sherds, plants, and rocks where they are.
• Do not use drones in the park.
• Park entrance is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Park Observatory
Homolovi State Park has its own observatory
with star parties every month, except
December. Enjoy close-up views of the night
sky far away from city lights!
Drones
Do not use drones in the park! The Department
of Interior operates an air base in Winslow, AZ,
and flying drones can have a serious impact on
aircrafts.

In the high grassland of 14th century northern
Arizona, an ancient people found a home
along the Little Colorado River. These people,
the Hisat’sinom (known to archaeologists as
the Anasazi), paused in their migrations to till
the rich flood plain and sandy slopes before
continuing north to join people already living
on the mesas, people who are today known as
the Hopi.
The Hopi people of today still consider
Homolovi part of their homeland. They
continue to make pilgrimages to these sites,
renewing the ties of the people with the land.
The Hopi say that the broken pottery and
stones are now part of the land and are the trail
the Bahana will follow when he returns.
In an effort to protect these sites, the Hopi
people supported the idea of Homolovi State
Park. This idea resulted in the establishment of
the park in 1986. The park serves as a center
of research for the late migration period of the
Hopi from the 1200s to the late 1300s. The
park also offers hiking trails, camping, and
interpretive exhibits.
