While we can never repay our debt to these heroes, we can honor them every day. Thanks to the work of the families, friends, elected officials, fire professionals, and a generous donation from Arizona Public Service Foundation, Arizona’s first Memorial State Park opened to the public on November 30, 2016. Arizona State Parks and Trails is proud to offer Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park as a public space where we can pay tribute to them for generations to come. The full trail is seven miles round-trip. Plan for a 4+ hour hike. There is no drinking water on the trail, so please bring adequate food and water. Those making the seven-mile hike should begin before noon. Visitors should bring a flashlight in the event that hiking out after dark becomes necessary. Restrooms are available at the trailhead. General Rules • Do not litter! “Leave no trace” and pack out what you bring in, or use the trash receptacles provided in the park. • Drive your vehicle only on designated paved surfaces. Park only in designated parking areas. Do not park on the side of the road. • STAY ON DESIGNATED TRAILS. Cutting trails degrades habitat and harms the landscape. • Do not use glass containers in the park. • All of our parks adhere to firearm and hunting regulations. Please familiarize yourself with this information. Pets • Keep your pets on a maximum six-foot leash at all times. Pets must be attended at all times. • Pick up after your pet. • For additional information related to pets, visit our website or ask park staff. Hotshots Trail: A 2.5-mile trail through the Weaver Mountains that leads to the Observation Deck. Based on their rank and tool order, 19 granite plaques set into rocks share a photo and a story of each fallen Hotshot with a message from the family. Interpretive signs provide information about wildland firefighting. There are commemorative benches that allow hikers to rest and appreciate the beauty of the area. From the Observation Deck, hikers can see the Fatality Site 400 feet below and the Town of Yarnell to the east. Additional interpretive signs outline the tragic events of the Yarnell Hill Fire. A Tribute Wall is available to leave stickers, patches and other mementos in honor of the sacrifice the Granite Mountain Hotshots made to protect these communities. Journey Trail: This 1-mile trail allows visitors to follow in the last steps of the Hotshots down to the Fatality Site where they made their last stand. Encircling the site are 19 gabions, one for each Hotshot, united by chains representing their eternal bond. Inside, 19 steel markers show the position where each Hotshot was found. A path, benches, and a memorial flagpole surround the gabions. Visitors can take time here to pay respects, but please remain outside of the gabion enclosure out of respect for the Hotshots and their families. Memorial Bronze Statue This bronze statue honors the Hotshots and can be viewed near the park entrance or on the park website.
